The ivory billed woodpecker has been classified was extinct until their was a recorded sighting of one in April 2005. they are around 20 inches in length and have a 30 inch wing span. some of the distinguishing features are white markings on their neck and back, extensive white on the upper edge and under wings, pale yellow eyes, a bright red crest on the males and large ivory coloured bills.
it is the third largest woodpecker in the world. it is a carnivore with the average life span of 20-30 years. it weighs450 to 570 g.
